C-River has highest fertility rate in S-South — NPC By Emma Una CALABAR — CROSS River State has the highest fertility rate in the South-South with a 35 per cent ratio closely followed by Bayelsa State with 32 percent birth rate. Chairman of National Population Commission, NPC,  Chief Eze Duruiheoma, who stated this in his message to mark the 2017 World Population Day, yesterday said efforts must be made to stem the birth rise in the state. Duruiheoma said the birth rate rise at a rapid rate in Nigeria was due to non adoption  of family planning by those within the reproductive age. The message, which was delivered by the state Director of the commission, Mr Billy Eteng, at the sensitisation programme sponsored by United Nations Food and Population, stated: “The population of Cross River is increasing more rapidly than other states of the South-South and our survey shows that the state has the highest fertility rate in the region with a 35 per cent ratio and efforts must be made to stem the birth rate before it gets out of hand.” He stated that wrong religious doctrine by churches and mosques with cultural prejudices were responsible for the rejection of family planning  by women and men in Nigeria, fuelling population increase in the country. “Resistance to family planning and child-spacing have been deeply rooted in our cultural prejudices and wrong interpretation of religious injunctions by churches and mosques, despite the fact that the two major religions, Christianity and Islam, enjoin parents to protect and cater for their children,”  he said. The message, which was delivered by the state Director of the commission in Cross River State, Mr Billy Eteng at the sensitization programme sponsored by the United Nation Food and Population  stated that  the theme for the 2017 celebration,  “Family planning, birth spacing empowering people, Developing Nations,” was aptly chosen to capture the essence of population control and the need to cater for the wellbeing of  the existing population in a country. “The religious leaders tell their followers that children come from God and nobody should adopt birth control to reduce the number of children they give birth to. Are we saying it is better to have abortions and deaths that result from such practices or they should be allowed to control adopt birth control which is safe?” The post C-River has highest fertility rate in S-South — NPC appeared first on Vanguard News.
