Lasu shutdown over election
The management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has announced that in view of the forthcoming national and state elections, it has declared a recess for both staffand students of the institution with effect fromMonday March 23.
The school also stated that students and staff are, therefore, advised to vacate the campus immediately, stressing that the date of resumption will be announced later.
However, workers in the university have continued their protest, which started last week Monday, calling on the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Obafunwa, to proceed on terminal leave and asking the state government to give the university an acting vice chancellor.
The protest, which caused a heavy trafficalong the LASU-Ojo-Badagry Expressway, had all unions of the universities in attendance, chanting anti-Obafunwa songs and displaying placards with various inscription such as: ‘LASU workers need a change from dictatorship to listening administrator’, among others.
Speaking with Daily Independent, Chairman of Senior Staff Associationof Nigerian Universities (SSANU), LASU chapter, Saheed Oseni, explained that the agitations of the unions are almost the same.
He alleged that the state government removed and damaged the cars and buses that were used to barricade the gates of the school by the unions and forced the gate opened.
He also stressed that workers in the university are working under fear, stating that mere looking at the scenario from outside, it seems all is well, which is far from the reality.
“Our people are working in fear but when you look at it, it seems everything is peaceful but it is far from it; we are working in fear,” he said.
He also said the management are administering the university as if they are running a private establishment, stressing that workers are been victimised, and that junior officersare placed highly above the senior officers.
