Journalists tasked on developmental health promotion By Edoamaowo Udeme MEDIA practitioners have been urged to enshrine development journalism in their day to day activities as part of their role to society. Making the call in Keffi, Nasarawa State during a 2- day media workshop on reporting and trending development journalism, the Executive Director of the International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH), Moji Makonjuola  urged  journalists to harness properly the strengths resourcefulness, resilience and diversities inherent in their profession and its platforms. Speaking at the event  in put together in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, she harped on journalists being  custodians of the totality of society’s core ethics, value, morals and development. Makonjuola, a journalist herself, noted: “We have worked tirelessly to position the human race where it is today because in our own way, we antithetically make the pen mightier than the sword – permit the much clichéd truth. “When the conflicts and crisis die down and the cameras leave, the quieter stories become development journalism. “The media has the onerous task of passing the message succinctly and unequivocally to the populace so that the outcome – growth of humanity – rests purely on our shoulders as reporters, correspondents, journalists whatever our platform – print, electronic, social/online etc. The UNFPA  media representative, Kori Habib said family planning should not be seen as  aimed at reducing the population but as a tool in Saving the lives of women. “We shouldn’t forget that a woman in labour in a rural area must have three delays; permission from husband or guardian, means of transportation to a healthcare facility and if the caregivers at the health facility are a trained personnel”.   The post Journalists tasked on developmental health promotion appeared first on Vanguard News.
