CRH seeks drug abuse awareness in schools By Gabriel Olawale Centre for the Right to Health, CRH has urged the Federal Government to institutionalise drug education in secondary and tertiary institutions across the country even as it pointed out the need to support rehabilitation process for people willing to be free of drug addiction. Speaking during the 2017 World Drug Day event held in collaboration with the Student Union Government, Lagos State Polytechnic, CRH Deputy Manager, Mr. Samuel Nwafor said effects of drug abuse are numerous but CRH was more particular with issues related to HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections, STIs “A person that is intoxicated by drugs does not have informed decision and can do anything that can make them vulnerable to HIV and other STIs.” A study carried out shows that greater percent of people who says they are using drugs are actually link to high institution. So by including this knowledge in their curriculum will give them better understanding of danger of drug abuse. “Government should also look at funding the rehabilitation process because a lot of drug addicts are willing to come out of it but there is processes and therapy to it which government can support. The people promoting all the social vises in Nigeria, most of them are linked to drug use such as blowing pipeline, crime on the highway, raping girls among others. Team Doctor, CRH, Dr. Eyohwo Tega said drugs are made to be beneficiary to man but could be bad when abused. He said such abuse could lead to poor concentration and performance at school because it acted on the brain. “Due to financial aspect of meeting their drug need, you see young boys going into crime while some behave irrationally. All these are not their fault, it is the effect of drugs abuse which is actually a disease that need treatment. In her keynote speech, the Director Drug Demand Reduction Directorate, NDLEA, Mrs. Oyutu Precious called for community support to enable government counteract drug trafficking and abuse. On behalf of the students of LASPOTECH, Social Director, Mr. Akinbiyi Oluwatosin said the new knowledge on the danger of drug abuse would be passed to others in their host community and environment.
