Two former Inspectors General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun and Mike Okiro, yesterday, charted the way forward towards ending the Boko Haram insurgency in the country.
Speaking with Daily Sun during the National Security Summit 2015 organised by the Nigeria Police Force in conjunction with The Sun Publishing Limited, publishers of The Sun titles, Balogun said the summit was a resurrection of community policing, which died unexpectedly.
Balogun said he hoped the summit would curtail the crime situation in the country.
He added that by being very proactive, the issue of insurgency would be a thing of the past in the country.
“We have to be very proactive in every respect,” Balogun said.
Speaking earlier, Okiro said the state of insecurity in the country could be nipped in the bud on the part of security agencies through intelligence, which they must galvanise from the community.
Okiro added that without intelligence, the security agencies could not fight insecurity, noting that those who committed crimes in the society lived among the people.
“The people who are carrying out these nefarious activities live among the people in the community. Those who have information, if for instance they go to the security agencies, they will act on it and ensure that the insecurity is brought down,” Okiro said.
Asked why the issue of Boko Haram insurgency lingered till now, Okiro said Boko Haram insurgents lived among the people, reiterating his call that the citizenry should give the security agencies information to end insecurity in the country.
