Jacob Mahonri Espinal, a former Brigham Young University-Idaho student, learned this the hard way. He was hit with a 180-day jail sentence and five years of probation after getting caught altering his college transcript and accepting thousands in scholarship money awarded as a direct result of the doctored marks. The 24-year-old was sentenced on Monday (April 6) after being found guilty of felony computer fraud and grand theft, Post Register reported.
Espinal’s scheme was discovered last year when authorities noticed a “discrepancy” in his transcript, which magically transformed the pre-med student’s failing grades to straight A’s. Turns out he worked in the school’s records and registration office, where he accessed the student system and made the transcript changes in 2013 and 2014.
After police contacted him, Espinal reportedly admitted to the crime. But by that time, he had already spent $5,000 of the $7,000 academic scholarship money he received as a result of the m“Basically he stole a spot in the university from somebody, stole grades that he didn’t earn, stole credit [he] didn’t earn and potentially damaged the reputation of the university,” Seventh Judicial District Judge Greg Moeller said.
Seems like it would’ve been much easier to just switch majors.
