Residents of Obaseki streets, Ikpoba Hill in Benin City, the Edo State capital, were shocked to see three policewomen beaten and stripped naked following an altercation between the policewomen from the Ikpoba Hill Division and some tenants in the area.

The policewomen were said to have besieged the house to arrest two notorious female tenants on the invitation of the landlady of the house when they were overpowered and beaten mercilessly and stripped naked in the process.

Trouble was said to have started when the landlady of the House, simply identified as Mrs Okeibuse, was dissatisfied with the conduct of the tenants and subsequently served them quit notice.

The landlady who spoke on the incident explained that she had to invite the police following an alleged attempt to set her building ablaze and threat to her life, a situation she said degenerated into a brawl between the policewomen and the tenants who resisted arrest.

The female tenants were said to have placed a call to some thugs in the neighbourhood who came in their numbers and descended on the policewomen, stripping them naked in the process.

According to the landlady, "The tenants in company of some thugs attacked the policewomen, beat them and stripped them naked. It took the intervention of some Hausa traders within the neighbourhood who prevented the assailants from inflicting further injuries on us. I had to run for my life when it was obvious that their intention was to kill and set my property on fire before my husband came."

However, a neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity accused the owner of the house of being in a habit of harassing tenants in the house with police officers at the slightest provocation.
